August Insights

August is a month of transition, a bridge between the carefree days of summer and the renewed structure of the months ahead. As vacations come to an end and the excitement of a new school year begins, many of us are adjusting to changing routines, new responsibilities and fresh opportunities. While these shifts can feel energizing, they can also bring uncertainty, stress or anxiety. Whatever this season looks like for you, know that it's okay to ease into change one step at a time. Transitions aren't about having everything figured out on day one, they're about giving yourself the grace to adapt. Whether you're a student preparing for a new classroom, a parent balancing busy schedules or someone returning to work after a season of rest, remember that growth happens gradually. Healthy routines, meaningful connections and moments of self-care provide the foundation we need to navigate change with confidence.

As you move through this month, make your mental well-being a priority. Caring for your mind is just as important as managing your calendar. Schedule time to rest, reflect, recharge and reconnect with the people and activities that bring you peace. By taking care of yourself, you're better equipped to care for those around you and embrace the opportunities that come with a new season.

This August, let National Wellness Month serve as an invitation to care for yourself with the same compassion you show others. Welcome new beginnings with resilience, patience and hope. Every small step toward balance is a step toward lasting wellness and every new day offers another opportunity to grow.

As always, we’re here to support you in your journey towards wellness.

Warmly,

Serenity Psychiatry and Wellness Team

"New school year experiences, a time for exciting change. Not only are the children making new friendships but the parents are too. This is a great time for school aged children and families to build core memories." - Judy Van Sader, Receptionist

Reset Your Routine

As summer comes to a close, consider using August as a "reset month."

Try these simple wellness habits:

  • Gradually adjust bedtime and wake-up times before school or work resumes.

  • Prepare meals and snacks ahead of busy weekdays.

  • Spend 10 minutes each day practicing mindfulness, journaling or quiet reflection.

  • Limit screen time before bed to improve sleep quality.

  • Schedule something enjoyable each week, even during busy seasons.

  • Remember that rest is productive, too.

Consistency is what supports lasting wellness.

Helping Children Navigate the Back-to-School Transition

Returning to school is a major adjustment for many children and teens. Some may eagerly anticipate seeing friends, while others may experience anxiety about academics, social situations or new environments.

Parents can help by:

  • Beginning school routines one to two weeks before classes start.

  • Talking openly about both excitement and worries without dismissing feelings.

  • Maintaining predictable morning and evening routines.

  • Celebrating effort rather than perfection.

  • Watching for signs that anxiety is becoming overwhelming, such as significant sleep changes, physical complaints, withdrawal or persistent distress.

The goal isn't to eliminate every worry, it is to help children build confidence that they can handle challenges with support.
